A new glasshouse was built at Tashkent Botanical Garden in the mid-1990s, compensating for the 22 hectares ceded to the city zoo in 1995. It initially held around 800 tropical and subtropical plant species. Lacking a functioning shading system, staff resorted to coating the glass with clay, and a heating failure during the winter of 2011-2012 killed some 500 specimens. The garden, open to the public since the 1990s, has announced renovation plans to reorganise the glasshouse into three zones for tropical, subtropical and aquatic plants.
