History
The Alishan Botanical Garden, within the national forest recreation area of the same name (Chiayi County), has long been tasked with collecting, conserving and studying high-mountain plants; the Chiayi Branch of the Forestry and Nature Conservation Agency sees the "浮光界" greenhouse as a window opened to the public on this work. On the commissioning of its staging: a public "curation" contract for the greenhouse, worth NT$7.4 million, was reissued in late December 2024 after a first call drew no bidder on 23 December. Two agencies submitted bids on 7 January 2025 and the contract was awarded on 6 February 2025 to a design agency, Ider (伊德品牌設計), for delivery running until 30 June 2026.
The opening ceremony took place on 18 June 2026, with a flamenco performance, and the greenhouse has been open to the public since that day. A day of talks and forest-wellness workshops, by registration, was held in the garden the next day. The name evokes the clouds of Alishan and the morning light that passes through the forest, setting leaf shadows in motion.
Architecture and engineering
News articles describe "浮光界" as a transparent high-mountain greenhouse; the English presentation text published by the project speaks of light passing through "glass", foliage and shifting layers of atmosphere. The staging rests on a route laid out by an artist using plant-curation methods, on lighting entrusted to a dedicated team, whose tones are announced as changing with the seasons, and on a misting system: one visitor advises coming in clear weather, when the water mist starts.
Design coordination is credited to Ider (伊德設計), installations to Ku Flower (古栻設計), and civil-works and interior-fitting firms appear among the partners. The greenhouse can be visited in any weather.
Plant collections
The greenhouse presents plants of Taiwan's high mountains, with particular attention to species that carry "Alishan" in their name and illustrate the diversity of the environment. The presentation text cites ferns, bryophytes, dicots, monocots and gymnosperms, tied to Alishan through their classification and naming thanks to numerous collections. The aim is to show these plants as close as possible to their form and growth habit, and to convey how they respond to humidity, light and the passing seasons, conditions normally met only by climbing the mountain. The botanical garden, to which the greenhouse belongs, collects, conserves and researches alpine plants.
Visiting
The greenhouse stands in the Alishan Botanical Garden, near Xiaoliyuan Hill (小笠原山), inside the national forest recreation area, which charges an entrance fee. Local pages say it opens at dawn, so it can be visited after watching the sunrise at Zhushan; the rest of the day can take in the electric garden vehicle serving the area, the Shuishan wellness trail and the old Shuishan railway trail. The artificial mist is said to be at its best in clear weather, and the shelter also suits rainy days.
The garden hosts seasonal events: the "Alishan Style Season" (阿里山風格季) offered a forest-picnic morning on 28 and 29 August 2026, with a route between the greenhouse, the trail and the wellness cabin (free registration, entrance ticket not included).
