History
The Guilinyang National Tropical Agriculture Park (桂林洋国家热带农业公园) is a project of the Hainan Agricultural Reclamation Investment Holding group (海垦控股), listed among the major projects of Hainan's 13th five-year plan; it covers 770 hectares east of Haikou, in Meilan District. An online encyclopedia, citing a provincial government dispatch, dates the launch ceremony to 31 December 2015. In November 2017 a Hainan Daily report described a building site where glass-walled buildings shone in the sun like vast industrial halls, and the group's chairman demanded an opening before the 2018 Spring Festival.
Phase one opened on the morning of 8 February 2018. The Agriculture Dream Factory (农业梦工厂) was its centrepiece: about 315 mu of land, some 106,000 m² of glass greenhouses and an announced investment of 250 million yuan, alongside a new tropical orchard, a shared vegetable garden and the historic village of Gaoshan. According to the encyclopedia, the first Spring Festival week drew more than 110,000 visitors, and the park was rated a 3A tourist attraction in May 2020. In 2019 the 1 May programme published by the Haikou tourism bureau included a vegetable-planting activity in these glass greenhouses. Press in 2026 shows the park still active: on 20 May the group's chairman visited the projects 雪山之王 (the snow park) and 梦工厂嘉年华 (the Dream Factory carnival), and on 24 September a Hainan portal relayed, from the WeChat account 海口旅游, a party for the mid-autumn and National Day holidays (梦工场双节生活派对).
Architecture and engineering
The glass greenhouses of the Agriculture Dream Factory total about 106,000 m² of built area on about 315 mu of land. The figure appears in the February 2018 opening report and in Haikou's tourist press in 2019, which detail four sets of intelligent greenhouses: seedlings, picking, potted plants and an ecological park. The 2017 report speaks of glass-walled buildings whose roofs carry hanging computer-control equipment.
Cultivation is largely soilless. A Hainan Daily report of February 2019 notes that fruit and vegetables grow on a specially blended coconut-husk substrate, without pesticides and with only foliar fertiliser; tomatoes and cucumbers are hung to about 2 m, and several vegetable varieties sit on movable square steel trays, a vertical-growing system praised for its yield.
Plant collections
Production and demonstration take as much room here as the botanical collection. The report of 6 February 2019 describes fruit cucumbers, cherry tomatoes and small Chinese cabbages to pick on the spot, as well as a wide range of ornamentals: orchids, African violets, aglaonemas, leopard calatheas and anthuriums, which the author likens to a small park of tropical flowers. It also notes that everything had been picked by the end of the morning and that new ripe fruit would take three or four days.
Among the components announced in 2018 are a 7,700 m² tropical forest, an 8,980 m² agricultural carnival and an 11,000 m² flower restaurant; the 2019 tourist press adds a café-bookshop, a rainforest theatre, a live-action team combat game (真人CS) and an artificial-snow park, the 雪山之王.
Visiting
The park lies about 10 km from central Haikou and 5 km from Meilan airport according to the 2019 tourist press. The historic village of Gaoshan (高山村), with its museum of old farm tools and everyday objects (乡愁博物馆), the shared vegetable garden and the tropical orchard can be visited within the same park; in 2019 the Haikou tourism bureau paired it with the Xiangshijie estate (香世界庄园), then holding a first herb festival, in a spring driving circuit.
An online encyclopedia recommends two to four hours on site. The park is presented as free to enter, with some attractions charged; the first Spring Festival week of 2018 drew more than 110,000 people, a sign of heavy crowds at that season. The official and press sources from 2026 consulted speak of parties and management visits, not of how the greenhouses are visited: the exact circuit should be confirmed with the park before travelling.
