History
The Nanchang Ganpo Rare Plant Garden (南昌赣鄱珍奇植物园, often shortened to Nanchang Rare Plant Garden) was built inside the Xixia modern agriculture park, in Xinjian District, about 35 minutes' drive from the city centre. The project was already being prepared in 2018: on 23 August, its representatives signed a technical consulting agreement for the construction of the garden with the South China Botanical Garden, part of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and discussed its design and operation, according to the release published on 24 August.
The garden opened for the May Day holiday of 2025. It is run by the Jiangxi Daily press group (江西日报社), for which it is the first cultural-tourism project. According to the newspaper, more than 10,000 tickets had been sold before the opening and attendance passed 30,000 visitors in five days, about 6,000 a day; opening day was enlivened by a children's fashion show, a caterpillar parade and a concert.
On 9 May 2025 the Jiangxi Flower Association published a call for operators of the site's shops and activities. The text lists five functional zones: the entrance, the visitor centre, the greenhouse cluster, the Hu Xiansu science pavilion (胡先骕科普馆) and a sunken plaza. In July 2025 an opinion piece on the Dajiang portal showed lychees ripening under the glass of one of the greenhouses.
Architecture and engineering
The greenhouse cluster consists of three separate volumes, described as single-span greenhouses, with a combined built area of 22,960 m², about two thirds of the 34,198 m² built on the site. The rainforest hall (热带雨林馆) measures 10,986 m²; the May 2025 call for operators presents it as one of the largest exhibition greenhouses in Asia and places activities on its ground and upper floors, which points to a two-level volume. The desert hall (梦幻沙洲馆, 4,916 m²) is described as a sunken greenhouse, with a relief of stone forest, terraces, hills, eroded plateaus and gentle slopes. The flower-and-fruit hall (奇花异果馆, 7,058 m²) also plays on varied terrain, with watercourses.
An opinion piece from July 2025 mentions only a glass dome, a glass curtain wall and a control system that keeps the temperature stable.
Plant collections
The three greenhouses are organised by major world regions. The rainforest hall strings together rainforests of Asia, the Americas, Africa and Australia, with a rainforest-culture zone (雨林文化区); local press notes a misty boardwalk and a waterfall there, themes picked up in the promotional videos. The desert hall distinguishes American, African and Asian-Australian zones, plus a succulent section; its large groups of cacti are among the attractions cited in May 2025. The flower-and-fruit hall is divided into Asian, shade, American and African zones, with climbers and rock-dwelling plants added; reports show children observing tropical fruit plants.
Lychees are also grown under glass: in July 2025 an opinion piece describes several trees with fruit still green, some beginning to redden. According to the title of a Dajiang video report, the garden shows more than 2,000 species of rare plants.
Visiting
The garden lies in the southern part of the quality-agriculture zone of the Xixia park, in Xinjian District, about 35 minutes' drive from central Nanchang. The route links the entrance, the visitor centre, the three greenhouses, the Hu Xiansu pavilion and a sunken plaza. The three halls measure from 4,900 to 11,000 m², so a complete visit takes several hours.
The May Day holiday of 2025 drew about 6,000 visitors a day, with three attendance records in a row according to the newspaper. A visitor quoted in its columns praises the free drinking-water points and shared phone chargers; families are the dominant audience in the reports.
