History

The project began in 2007, when Gyeonggi Province drew up a master plan for an arboretum on provincial forest land, with the twin aims of conserving plant genetic resources and giving the west coast a forest recreation space. Development was carried out in stages from 2007 to 2019, and the arboretum officially opened on 10 May 2019 on Seongam-do island (선감도), now linked to the mainland, at Daebudo in Ansan's Danwon District. It is the second arboretum created by the province, after Mulhyanggi in Osan, and is run by the provincial Forest Environment Research Institute. The island's name refers to a legend in which an immortal came down from fairyland to bathe in clear water.

The area is 101 hectares for the province and 117 hectares in the national register of public arboreta, where the garden has been listed since 3 May 2022. The official page counts 19 themed gardens. The exhibition glasshouse is one of three main facilities it presents, with the visitor centre and the Sangsang viewpoint. The glasshouse already appears in the visit report published by the city of Ansan in July 2020.

Architecture and engineering

The exhibition glasshouse is a small glazed building of about 350 m² according to visitors' accounts. It serves to conserve and show warm-temperate and maritime plants (난대식물 and 해양성 식물), in an arboretum centred on the flora of the islands and coasts of central Korea.

Pots hanging from the ceiling (행잉 플랜트) let visitors see the plants at several levels, in addition to the ground planting, and small sculptures are placed in the room. An article by the province (March 2024) notes that the glasshouse stays green all year. The building stands right next to the visitor centre, near the east entrance, to the left of the wall waterfall (벽천폭포) that marks the garden's entrance.

Plant collections

The official facilities page of the arboretum lists 50 species and 1,452 plants in the glasshouse and names the hwangchil-namu (황칠나무) and the siromi (시로미). An article by the province (March 2024) adds the songak (송악), the aegi-dongbaek (애기동백), the sanjidak-namu (삼지닥나무) and the neokjul-gosari (넉줄고사리), among others.

A visit report from February 2024 notes camellias (동백) and fatsias (팔손이) but no spectacular bloom: what the season offered of most appeal were the scented winter shrubs, the seohyang (서향) and the gilmagaji-namu (길마가지나무). The same report describes the building as a place made to conserve and show warm-temperate and maritime plants, with hanging pots that give a three-dimensional display.

Visiting

The glasshouse is the first stop on the "fragrance" route recommended by the city of Ansan and by the province: exhibition glasshouse, rose garden, herb garden and then the Sangsang viewpoint, about 3 km there and back. The rose garden is laid out with reused concrete culvert pipes and carries about 1,300 roses, in flower from May to late summer. The Sangsang viewpoint, about 1.3 km from the east entrance according to one visitor (some thirty minutes' walk), is reached by a 70 m art hill covered in ceramic fragments and looks over the Yellow Sea and Lake Sihwa.

Beside the glasshouse, the garden of salt-tolerant plants (염생식물원), the island plant garden (도서식물원) and the sand-dune garden (모래언덕원) extend the maritime theme. An article by Korea Tourism mentions the fresh-leaf season, peonies, lotus, roses and silver grass (억새); in midwinter the glasshouse offers few flowers. The park is closed on Mondays and, according to visit reports, has neither a shop nor rubbish bins: bring water and a snack.
