In Shijiazhuang Botanical Garden, opened in 1998 north-west of the Hebei capital, the tropical plant hall is one of the park's large glasshouses. Guides give it over 6,000 m² of built area, five zones (rainforest, palms, orchids, shade plants, fruit trees) and more than 500 species, over 10,000 plants in all, among them a dragon tree about 150 years old. After an equipment overhaul and landscape renovation, Hebei TV announced its reopening on 29 September 2026, with its living walls entirely replanted.

History

Shijiazhuang Botanical Garden lies north-west of the city. It officially opened on 1 October 1998 (the municipal garden bureau's page and Chinese Wikipedia). Two large extensions followed, in 2002 and in 2011. The garden's area is given as 200 ha by the official page and as 167.1 ha by Visit Beijing.

The tropical plant hall (热带植物观赏厅) is among the 47 sights the municipal garden bureau lists in 2021. A 2019 guide describes it as the children's favourite glasshouse, where visitors walk along a wooden boardwalk among tiered tropical plants.

The hall was closed and then reopened after works. On 29 September 2026 Hebei TV reported that, after an equipment overhaul, a landscape renovation and an optimisation of the environment, the hall had been renewed and reopened, at the same time as the opening of the autumn flower show; Bendibao repeated the news on 30 September. Neither text gives the exact reopening date or the length of the closure.

Architecture and engineering

Visit Beijing gives the hall a built area of more than 6,000 m², split into five zones: rainforest, palms, orchids, shade plants and fruit trees. Plants are arranged at staggered heights, and a 2019 guide mentions a wooden boardwalk winding into the glasshouse. The Hebei press calls it a "tropical greenhouse".

The uncaptioned photographs in Hebei TV's report (29 September 2026) show, above banana plants, palms and orchids, a roof of transparent panels on a white steel frame, and a large living wall made of planted modules.

Plant collections

According to Visit Beijing, the hall gathers more than 500 species and over 10,000 plants, presented as plants of ornamental, economic or scientific interest. One of the pieces cited is a dragon tree 150 years old and about 5 m tall. Visit Beijing also names the frangipani, the kapok tree, the bird-of-paradise (鹤望兰), the sapodilla (人心果), the lychee and the tree fern 桫椤, described as a "living fossil".

The 2026 renovation concerned the living walls, where 14,000 plants were replaced with species suited to a rainforest habitat: begonias, Boston ferns, pothos and schefflera (鸭脚木). More than ten flowering tropical plants were introduced, among them 地涌金莲, the cannonball tree (炮弹树), 姜荷花, 蝎尾蕉, 老虎须 and 两面针. The fruit-tree zone was redesigned and enriched with 黄金木瓜, 红叶象腿蕉, 嘉宝果, 千指蕉, 紫苞芭蕉 and 神秘果. According to Visit Beijing, a tulip and hyacinth show is held in the hall at Spring Festival.

Visiting

The desert plant hall, east of the garden's main entrance, built in 2011 (about 1,000 m², more than 600 species and 4,000 plants according to Visit Beijing), is presented as answering the tropical hall and the camellia hall. Bendibao also lists the bonsai hall among the spaces reopened with the tropical hall in late September 2026.

Visit Beijing recommends April to October and allowing one to two hours for the park. The garden holds several flower shows each year: the tulip festival in spring, the Spring Festival tulip show in the tropical hall and, in 2026, an autumn show that opened on 29 September, its bloom announced until mid or late October.
