History

The building was put up for Akzona Inc. as its corporate headquarters, to designs by I. M. Pei & Partners, and was dedicated in July 1981. The Biltmore Company bought it in March 1986, and it is known today as the Biltmore Building.

As first drawn, the Akzona project would have swept away all of Pack Square's buildings. After talks between the Preservation Society of Asheville and Buncombe County, the ones along South Pack Square were saved.

Architecture

The concrete-and-glass building has seven floors above ground and four levels of underground parking; it cost $5 million.

Use today

It houses offices of the Biltmore Company.
