History

The greenhouse belongs to the Jinhae Bay Ecological Forest (진해만생태숲), one of the three facilities that the official site groups under the name Jinhae Dream Park, with the wood culture experience centre and the Gwangseokgol rest area. According to an article in the Kyongnam Shinmun daily (August 2012), the park opened in March 2009. The official site gives 2002 to 2007 as the project period of the ecological forest, presented as the country's first natural ecological learning site.

By 2012 the press described the greenhouse as a 300 m² tropical-forest plant house beside the learning centre, where about 90 rare tree species could be seen, among them palms and bottlebrush trees. A Changwon city statement relayed in October 2019 lists the greenhouse among the facilities in operation, together with an indoor forest-bathing room. In 2025 the city's official account presented it to the public again.

The forest covers about 67 ha according to one official page, 126 ha according to the 2012 press and a regional tourism site.

Architecture and engineering

Local descriptions agree on its form: a glazed building with a dome (a "glass dome" for the Changwon city account), with a round glass roof according to a 2024 blog and glass outer walls according to a January 2025 article carried by the local-news site Welfarehello. The park's official site lists it among the buildings of the ecological forest as "one greenhouse, 301.94 m² of floor area".

Inside, a path links the planted beds. Information boards describe the plants, useful for children according to the city, and an archway under a glass ceiling serves as a photo spot. According to the caption of a city post of August 2025, palms stand tall and vines grow densely. The 2012 press places the plant house next to the forest's learning centre (official address: Jinhae-daero 1137beon-gil 97); the greenhouse itself is listed at number 88 on the same street.

Plant collections

The park operator advertises about 90 rare species in the plant house, plants seldom seen in Korea; an article of January 2025 counts 76, led by the red-berried shrub 백량금 (baengnyanggeum). The same article names roses, the horsetail 속새, angel's trumpet (엔젤트럼펫), 꽃기린, succulents, cacti (만세선인장, 환락선인장, 금호선인장) and a citrus tree (하귤) whose fruit overwinters and ripens in spring.

The 2012 press mentioned palms and bottlebrush trees (병솔나무) among the tropical trees. In 2025 the city describes a range from tropical to desert plants. Outside the glasshouse, the ecological forest holds 145 species of warm-temperate trees and shrubs, about 70,000 individuals laid out in themed forests; those figures cover the whole site, not the greenhouse.

Visiting

The greenhouse stands inside the ecological forest, behind the old Jinhae district office building. Its small size makes it a short stop, best combined with the neighbouring learning centre, which houses an indoor hinoki-cypress forest-bathing room according to the 2012 press, then with the ecological forest trail and its themed forests, the wood culture experience centre and the Gwangseokgol rest area, all part of the same park.

Local articles recommend it mainly as a pleasant shelter in winter. The Jinhae Botanic Museum, shown about a hundred metres away by a regional tourism site, is a separate establishment not covered here. Entry to the greenhouse is free; it is closed on Mondays, on 1 January and during the Seollal and Chuseok holidays.
