In Bukbang township, the public arboretum of Hongcheon, devoted to the mugunghwa (Korea's national flower), has a glazed exhibition greenhouse (전시온실) that the official site places on its visitor routes. A 2024 visitor found it small and walked a path inside it; a 2026 blog calls it the main greenhouse, open to see all year, with cycads, subtropical and Mediterranean plants and wildflowers. Neither its construction date nor its dimensions are published. A second greenhouse, devoted to bonsai, stands at the other end of the garden.

History
The exhibition greenhouse (전시온실) belongs to the Hongcheon Mugunghwa Arboretum, in Bukbang township. The official site presents the arboretum as the first in Korea laid out around the mugunghwa, the national flower, and as a tribute to Nam Gung-eok (1863-1939), a patriot attached to that flower. According to the official chronology, the land was bought in 2010; design studies were carried out and the creation plan approved in 2011; works, from demolition to landscaping, ran from 2012 to 2016 and were completed in September 2016, with the project period running from January 2011 to December 2016 (one year of design, five of construction). A temporary opening took place on 17 April 2017, registration as a public arboretum on 21 July 2017 and the opening ceremony on 28 July. The Mugunghwa House (April) and the forest library (October) were finished in 2021.
The greenhouse appears in the official list of the arboretum's buildings, alongside the forest library, the management office and two toilet blocks, and the county's tourism page lists it among the facilities. In August 2024 a visitor walked in through its open door and described a glass greenhouse that was not very large. Two markers place the arboretum: in July 2017 it held 1,072 species (about 140,000 plants), including 112 species of mugunghwa; in September 2020 the Korea Forest Service named it the best mugunghwa site in the seventh edition of a national competition.
Architecture and engineering
It is a modest glass greenhouse (유리온실). On the aerial view of the official plan, which numbers it 3, it appears as a small rectangular volume with a pale roof, set near the central plaza and the entrance car park. A visitor in August 2024 notes that it is not very large, that its door was open and that a path runs through it, with plants here and there.
Photographs on the official facilities page show a brick-paved path edged with stones, beds planted in the ground and, at the back, a wall painted with a mountain landscape and a waterfall. The official inventory lists other cultivation facilities: a propagation greenhouse (증식온실) and a bonsai facility (분재장). On the plan, the bonsai greenhouse (분재온실, number 11) lies at the other end of the garden; its official photograph shows glazed walls, shade blinds and bonsai standing on wooden shelves.
Plant collections
A visitor blog published in 2026 presents the exhibition greenhouse as the main one, where visitors can see plants in every season. It notes cycads (소철), the 굴거리나무 (given under its Korean name), other subtropical plants, Mediterranean plants and many carefully arranged wildflowers (야생화). An August 2024 blog mentions subtropical plants growing along an indoor path and suggests they are raised here because Hongcheon is a cold region; that is the blogger's remark, not a statement by the arboretum. In the official photograph, a short-trunked cycad stands beside the path, surrounded by variegated foliage and orange and red flowers.
Outside the greenhouse, the arboretum is above all a mugunghwa garden. According to its official presentation it held 112 species of mugunghwa (7,340 plants) in July 2017; a May 2026 article gives 120 species and 8,200 plants, and one blog counts about 80 varieties in the variety garden. The bonsai greenhouse displays, according to the same 2026 blog, bonsai and dozens of cultivated wildflowers.
Visiting
The exhibition greenhouse stands near the central plaza and the entrance car park; the official site lists it among the stops of routes 1 (about 40 minutes) and 2 (about 1 hour), near the end of each loop. The bonsai greenhouse, at the other end of the garden, appears on all three routes, the longest of which takes about 1 h 30.
The mugunghwa blooms mostly in July and August, and the annual festival of the flower is held in summer; a seasonal flower field of about 5,000 m² holds rapeseed and buckwheat, according to May 2026 press. The 2.7 km "Healing Forest" hiking trail reaches a viewpoint facing Garisan.
