At 1100 Cornwall Road, the Town of Oakville runs a greenhouse that grows the plants for the town's parks, median gardens, hanging baskets and planters, and that also houses a conservatory open to the public. Under a roof and walls of translucent panels on a metal frame, the conservatory gathers tropical plants, a pond and a stone waterfall; in 2016 the Town's horticulture supervisor named banana plants, coffee trees, hibiscus and cacti among them. Established here in 1990, after an earlier location in Trafalgar Park, the greenhouse can be visited free of charge all year except in July and August.

History
Oakville's municipal greenhouse was first located in Trafalgar Park before being moved in 1990 to its current address, 1100 Cornwall Road, according to an article in the Sheridan College student newspaper dated 15 March 2016.
The site's first purpose is horticultural: according to the Town, staff and volunteers grow the plants and flowers used in the town's parks, median gardens, hanging baskets and planters. In 2016, the Town's supervisor of horticulture and plant production put this output at about 120,000 bedding plants, including 350 planters and 350 hanging baskets, handled by two full-time employees helped by volunteers and high-school co-op students. The undated Doors Open Ontario listing speaks of more than 150,000 annuals grown on site.
The conservatory is presented by the Town as open to everyone, with a pond, a waterfall and an array of plants; the facility can also be rented for wedding ceremonies, photo sessions and group activities. In 2016 the same article noted that many residents did not know it existed, the site being set back from a busy road on the east side of town. The site has taken part in Doors Open Ontario in the past, but the event listing states that it is not part of the current season's programme.

Architecture and engineering
OpenStreetMap outlines the building as "Oakville Municipal Greenhouse", tagged as a greenhouse, with a footprint of about 2,300 m² measured on the polygon, covering the production areas as much as the conservatory. Photographs from 2015 in the place's Commons category show a metal frame whose roof and walls are fitted with flat translucent panels between glazing bars, with large heating pipes running under the framework. The 2016 article mentions "glass doors" at the entrance.
Inside, the conservatory is organised around a stone-edged pond and a stone waterfall. Tropical plants grown in another area of the greenhouse are placed in the parks in summer or displayed here, and a propagation room, where seeds sit on heated soils, is part of the production facilities. The Town notes that no power source is available for renters and that natural light is limited after 4 p.m. from November to March. An outdoor patio complements the conservatory from mid-June to Thanksgiving. The Doors Open Ontario listing classifies the site as an educational facility and a green building, with no further detail.

Plant collections
The Town describes the conservatory as an array of plants around a pond and a waterfall, and the Doors Open Ontario listing mentions plants from different geographical regions. In 2016 the Town's horticulture supervisor placed mostly tropical plants from South America or the Caribbean there, naming banana plants, coffee trees, hibiscus and cacti. Photographs from 2015 also show white and pink-violet orchids, a large monstera, tall columnar succulents in front of the translucent walls, and a planted pond.
Part of the tropical plants is grown separately, then taken out to the parks during the summer or displayed in the conservatory. The production calendar also sets the pace of the greenhouse: seeding and cuttings from January, transplanting from late March into April, planting out in the parks over the May long weekend once the risk of frost has passed, according to the 2016 article. The Town stresses that the greenhouse supplies the town with flower displays that change with the seasons.
Visiting
The greenhouse stands at 1100 Cornwall Road, on the east side of Oakville, set back from a busy road. Entry to the conservatory is free and staff answer visitors' questions, according to the horticulture supervisor quoted in 2016; the Halton community directory lists it as fully accessible. It closes in July and August, except for permitted events, as well as on public holidays, and may close at times for bookings.
Free guided tours, lasting an hour for up to twenty people, are requested by e-mail at least seven days ahead and are not offered from 1 March to 1 May or from 15 May to 15 June. In winter the warm air of the conservatory contrasts with the outdoors: the 2016 article compares it to an oasis in a concrete tundra.
