After fire destroyed Allan Gardens' original three-story pavilion in 1902, the City of Toronto erected a new Palm House in 1910, designed by municipal architect Robert McCallum. Its sixteen-sided glass-and-steel dome rises above a brick base with sandstone detailing, in an Edwardian Neoclassical style. The site expanded over time to six connected greenhouses, the last of which was funded in 2003-2004; orchids, begonias, cacti, and palms are grown today under this single historic roof.
