« Ten themed greenhouses tell the botanical story of the planet under one continuous ribbon of glass. »

After an initial push was stalled by the 1929 Crash and then the war, construction of the Montreal Botanical Garden's great exhibition greenhouses resumed under Mayor Jean Drapeau's administration, and they were inaugurated in 1956. The ten greenhouses that make up the complex each display a themed ecosystem: economically useful tropical plants, cacti and succulents, ferns, orchids, and bonsai and penjing, one of the richest collections outside Asia. In October 2024, the City of Montreal announced a $450 million investment plan over fifteen years to restore the entire greenhouse complex.
