Founded in 1935 and attached to the A. L. Takhtajyan Institute of Botany, Yerevan Botanical Garden covers about 80 hectares, and its first glasshouses date from that founding period. They now hold more than 670 tropical and subtropical species, among them a feijoa with silver and red flowers, avocado trees and orchids from Japan, China and Mexico. After a period of decline in the post-Soviet years, several collections have since been restored. The garden, open to the public for an entrance fee, also has a rose garden of more than 300 varieties and a palaeobotanical museum opened in 2008.
