The Century Towers, two residential towers on Avenue of the Stars, were completed in 1964 in Century City, once the back lot of the 20th Century Fox studios. They were the district's first residential high-rise, originally designed as apartments by I. M. Pei.
History
Century City is the name that Edmond Herrscher, director of property development at 20th Century Fox, gave to the studio's back lot, which the company decided to sell in 1958. That year the firm Welton Becket and Associates proposed a master plan conceived as a "city within a city", combining offices, shops and housing. In 1961, after the land was bought, Alcoa and the developer William Zeckendorf's company formed a joint venture, Century City Inc., which retained Becket to oversee the plan.
Becket then recruited well-known architects to shape the look of the district, among them Minoru Yamasaki, Charles Luckman, Skidmore, Owings and Merrill, Albert C. Martin Associates and I. M. Pei. Pei designed the Century Towers, the first major residential project in Century City, originally as apartments. The towers were completed in 1964.
Visiting
These residential buildings can be seen from Avenue of the Stars, on the southern edge of Century City, a district bounded by the Fox studios to the south and the Westfield mall to the north.
