Secured by Le Corbusier as part of the Chandigarh experiment, the architecture college was founded on 7 August 1961. Its building, credited to Le Corbusier and Aditya Prakash, takes up the studio scheme of the city's College of Art, built on an interplay of two standardised modules. It still houses the college, in Sector 12.
History
Le Corbusier secured the founding of an architecture college in Chandigarh as an integral part of what is called the Chandigarh experiment. He held that a built environment, however brilliant, cannot be fully understood, still less carried on, unless the principles governing its design are learnt by studying the parts of the city as it is lived in. The college was set up on 7 August 1961 to teach architecture.
Architecture
Chandigarh's College of Art was the first building of the Cultural Complex to be designed and built: top-lit studios and their annexes arranged around an interplay of two standardised modules, used both vertically and horizontally. The College of Architecture later took up the same principle; its building is credited to Le Corbusier and Aditya Prakash.
Prakash, who worked on the Chandigarh Capital Project from 1952 to 1963, took part in designing both the College of Art and the College of Architecture; the mural in the latter's porch is his own work.
Visiting
The building is that of a working college, in Sector 12 of Chandigarh.
