At Goun Botanical Garden, created near Cheongyang and opened in 2003, an article on the South Chungcheong provincial portal in July 2026 names the glass-dome greenhouse (돔형 온실) as the main attraction: under a high ceiling hung with art objects, colourful flowers and butterflies flying free, after a domed tunnel hung with flower pots and an exhibition hall of rare and threatened plants. This private 37-hectare garden is designated by the Ministry of Environment as an ex situ conservation institution for threatened wild plants.

History

Goun Botanical Garden was laid out on a wooded hillside in Cheongyang township. The Encyclopedia of Korean Culture ties it to a landscaping company founded in 1970: land prepared from 1991 to 1995, planting from 1996 to 2003, and approval as an arboretum in June 2003. The local press gives an opening date of 28 April 2003, over about 37 hectares. The Ministry of Environment designated it in 2010 as an ex situ conservation institution for threatened species.

Covered spaces were added over time. The facilities page of the garden's official website mentions a greenhouse where plants from the tropics and around the world, rare in the central region, can be seen. A tourism page updated in April 2019 describes a small greenhouse dominated by the scent of herbs and other exotic fragrances. The domed roof of the cultural hall is described from 2024 and the glass dome in 2026.

Architecture and engineering

The texts describe several covered spaces without always telling them apart. The glass dome is the most detailed: a high ceiling hung with art objects, a floor of flowers and, before it on the route, a domed tunnel whose pots hanging from the ceiling remind the author of the provincial-portal article of a wedding aisle. The county's official blog describes the cultural hall in September 2024 as a volume under a domed roof that recalls a large aviary, and the provincial portal sees in April 2025 a transparent glass roof at the centre of the space.

A post on the province's blog (July 2025) finds the glass greenhouse modest in appearance and fitted out rather as a quiet indoor garden. The county blog also places a greenhouse planted mostly with southern species where the straight path becomes a loop trail, and a permanent exhibition hall that it ties to the greenhouse (“온실 상설전시장”).

Plant collections

Under the dome, the provincial-portal article mentions colourful flowers, assorted plants and butterflies flying free; the domed tunnel is hung with flower pots. In the cultural hall the county blog saw begonias, miniature roses and nandina (남천) in September 2024, and a November 2024 blog saw potted chrysanthemums and begonias. The permanent exhibition hall holds, according to the county blog, 독미나리 (“toxic minari”), 새우난초 orchids (“shrimp orchid”), Japanese azaleas, hydrangeas, bonsai and miniature hostas, in a conservation zone for threatened plants.

In spring the hall hosts an exhibition of threatened plants: from 1 April to 10 May 2025 the press counted 150 varieties of 새우난초 orchids in 500 pots and 10 threatened species in 40 pots. The county counts 33 themed gardens; the species total ranges from 8,600 (county, encyclopedia) to more than 10,000 (2025 and 2026 press).

Visiting

In the provincial portal's account, the visitor first passes the welcome shop, then the domed tunnel, the panel on threatened plants and the indoor exhibition hall, before reaching the glass dome and then the boardwalk paths of the forest. The garden climbs a slope: the basic route takes about an hour on a gentle gradient to the viewpoint; the garden also has a 230 m roller slide, and the county blog advises two to three hours if the side gardens are included. In rain, the glazed spaces give shelter.

Spring combines the threatened-plant show with wildflowers, summer brings the hydrangeas, about a hectare of them. Neighbours named by the press include the Chilgapsan Mountain observatory, the Cheongyang chilli-pepper theme park and the wood-culture centre.
