History
The plan for the Bongsusan Arboretum was approved by the governor of South Chungcheong on 22 June 2009 and construction began on 17 November of the same year, according to the chronology published by Yesan county. The arboretum was registered as a public arboretum on 8 April 2015, a county ordinance on management and operation followed on 16 April and the inauguration ceremony took place on 14 May 2015. Works to install a pedestrian bridge were completed on 30 December 2018, then the insect ecology hall opened on 12 May 2021, together with the skydeck, an artificial waterfall and a forest play area, for a total of 6.2 billion won.
The display greenhouse is among the facilities described by the county; it is presented as one of the site's three greenhouses. The arboretum climbs the slope of Mount Bongsu, where the Imjon fortress stood, the scene of fighting between Baekje and Silla according to a travel portal, overlooking Yedang reservoir.
Architecture and engineering
The display greenhouse is a small glass building. A travel portal calls it built of glass, a 2021 blog speaks of a well-kept glass greenhouse, and a provincial article (visit of 2026) stresses that the space is small but themed, like a little botanical garden.
It stands at the front of the three indoor facilities on the climb, ahead of the visitor centre, which sits above it and holds a stone exhibition room, and of the insect hall. According to a provincial article of July 2025, the windows can be left open to let air circulate and the roof screens the direct sun, so that in summer it is cooler inside than outdoors. The forecourt has a photo spot, a small pond and a display drawn from the folktale of the golden and silver axes, with Lake Yedang behind.
Plant collections
The county sums up the greenhouse in a single sentence: visitors can observe subtropical plants, themed plant collections and aquatic plants. A small pond occupies the centre, with goldfish. A 2022 blog reports succulents on either side of the entrance, tropical fruit plants inside, a model of the Imjon fortress with its soldiers and jars of varied shapes; a provincial article of March 2023 notes flowers in bloom at the end of winter.
The whole 10-hectare arboretum holds 1,456 species and 336,351 plants, of which 408 woody species and 1,048 herbaceous ones, according to the county. The site also has a rose garden, a mugunghwa garden, a cherry avenue and twelve outdoor themed gardens, according to presentations of the county.
Visiting
The arboretum is entered by a small suspension footbridge from the car park; the path that climbs passes through a cherry-blossom tunnel in spring and alongside an artificial waterfall before reaching the greenhouse. Admission is free and the site is open all year, according to the county.
Further on come the visitor centre (177 collectors' stones donated by Yesan enthusiasts), the insect hall and the skydeck, 20 m high and 222 m long according to the county (22 m and 220 m in the 2021 press), from which Lake Yedang and Mount Bongsu can be seen: a quick return trip takes a quarter of an hour, the whole skydeck route about an hour. The Bongsusan recreation forest, opened in 2007, adjoins the arboretum, and the Yedang Lake suspension bridge is nearby.
