History

Anmyeondo Arboretum was laid out by the South Chungcheong provincial recreation-forest office and opened on 24 August 2005 at Seungeon-ri, in Anmyeon township, on 42 hectares of which some fifteen are themed gardens. It faces the island's recreation forest, whose natural pine stand, listed by the FAO as agricultural heritage of global importance according to 2026 press, forms its setting.

In spring 2009 it became the secondary venue of the Anmyeondo International Flower Expo, whose main site was the Kkotji seaside park. The Yonhap agency then counted one fern greenhouse, eighteen small gardens and 1,544 species of trees and shrubs, and described a “fern hall” (양치류관), the site's only exhibition building, showing 59 species (3,000 plants) and four fern fossils about 280 million years old. A gardening magazine called it the country's only specialised exhibition greenhouse in January 2024.

Architecture and engineering

The Encyclopedia of Korean Culture gives the greenhouse a floor area of 338 m². A 2007 blog already spoke of a “glass greenhouse” (유리온실) inside the arboretum. In 2009 the Yonhap agency described a “fern hall” (양치류관) as the arboretum's only exhibition building. The encyclopedia, for its part, presents it as the country's only exhibition greenhouse devoted specially to ferns.

Plant collections

The greenhouse is devoted to ferns; the encyclopedia adds Phoenix palms and cycads planted with them. In 2009 the press counted 59 species, or 3,000 plants, and showed four Palaeozoic fern fossils beside the living plants.

The rest of the arboretum grows more than 2,000 species (2,121 according to the encyclopedia) in some twenty themed gardens: the Asan garden, in the style of a traditional Korean country house; a camellia garden that flowers from December into spring; a garden of about a hundred aromatic plants; a mugunghwa garden of some 80 kinds, in bloom from July to October; and an evergreen garden of 15,700 m², according to 2026 press.

Visiting

The ticket is bought at the ticket office of the neighbouring recreation forest, and one then reaches the arboretum through an underpass. The site restricts entry for dogs, bicycles and scooters.

The peak periods are camellias from December into spring, azaleas from late April to early May, peonies in May and June, and mugunghwa from July to October. The press judges that one visit is not enough to see everything and suggests combining it with a night in the recreation forest. The grove of 모감주나무 at Bangpo bay, natural monument no. 138, lies nearby.
