In the Kryvyi Rih Botanical Garden, part of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, a complex of orangeries and greenhouses houses the collection of tropical and subtropical plants: 890 taxa according to Wikipedia, nearly a thousand according to the Encyclopedia of Modern Ukraine. Photographs from 2015 show a steel-framed greenhouse with a glazed roof, with zones of cacti, aquatic plants, ferns and climbers; every late winter, dozens of azalea cultivars flower there. In 2019 the garden reported a building in poor condition with very high heating costs.

History

The Kryvyi Rih Botanical Garden originates in a decision of the Presidium of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR taken in December 1972 according to Russian Wikipedia, then approved in 1975. A 52.4 ha plot was allocated in 1980, and an order of 25 June 1981 created a branch of the Donetsk Botanical Garden. The official opening dates from 1989 and, on 20 May 1992, the garden became an independent institution of the Academy. The first plants arrived from Donetsk as early as 1975 and spent their first years in school greenhouses; once the orangeries were built, they formed the core of the tropical and subtropical complex, according to local history published in 2023.

The known milestones are more recent. In March 2019 a garden employee admitted that the complex was not in good condition: a reconstruction project had been drawn up, but the roof repair had not been funded, and heating cost about 170,000 hryvnias a month, a sum that would need more than 5,600 visitors a month at 30 hryvnias to cover, a threshold never reached. In January 2023 a local television channel reported that the garden had received a generator, for fear that a power cut would leave the tropical collections without heating. In March 2026 local media again filmed the orangery with azaleas in full bloom.

Architecture and engineering

It is not a single building: in 2019 the garden speaks of a complex of orangeries, grouping the orangery and greenhouses. Photographs uploaded to Wikimedia Commons in 2015 show a steel-framed greenhouse with a glazed roof, with long central aisles lined with benches, a large metal stove with a vertical flue and, further on, areas planted in the ground: succulents, aquatic plants around a pool, and tropical trees, according to the captions of Ukrainian Wikipedia and the file titles.

The roof is the weak point. In 2019 its repair was unfunded and heavy snowfall was the main fear, with the orangery closed to visitors during such spells; light maintenance is done each summer, when the greenhouses are aired and dried out, which is not enough for tropical conditions. Heating is the other heavy item. In OpenStreetMap, two adjoining footprints of about 500 m² each, one of them named "Orangery", stand in the eastern half of the garden.

Plant collections

The garden's collection of tropical and subtropical plants numbers 890 taxa according to Wikipedia and nearly a thousand according to the Encyclopedia of Modern Ukraine; these figures cover the whole collection, with no indication of how much is grown in the orangery. What local media highlight are the azaleas: about 80 cultivars in all, around thirty of them in bloom in March 2026. In 2023 the azalea season is placed in February, and a visit to the orangery is promoted to see azaleas and camellias in flower; in 2019 primulas flower at the same time.

The captions of Ukrainian Wikipedia and the titles of Commons photographs also point to a zone of succulents and cacti, a zone of aquatic plants, ferns, monsteras, climbers, ivy and tropical trees. Outside the greenhouses the garden claims more than 4,000 species (press, 2023) and a dendrarium recognised as a national heritage asset since 2004.

Visiting

The orangery stands in the eastern part of the garden, towards Botanichna Street (formerly Marshaka Street), in the Damanskyi district. According to local press in 2023 it receives visitors on working days only, while the garden is open daily, and entry to the orangery is charged separately. Allow an hour for the greenhouses, more for the rest: 52.4 ha along a steppe ravine, with lilacs, magnolias, a cherry-blossom avenue, a peony garden, a rose garden of 215 cultivars and chrysanthemums. The azaleas flower mainly in February and March, the primulas in March. It is best to check opening before coming: the heating has already had to be secured with a generator (2023), and closures during heavy snowfall have been reported.
