Founded in 1839 under the authority of rector Maximovich and architect Beretti, Kyiv's Fomin Botanical Garden built its main climatron during the 1960s, with extensions continuing into the late 1970s. The greenhouse covers about 1,100 m² and holds nearly 4,000 subtropical and tropical species, including specimens up to 150 years old. Its centerpiece is an Australian Livistona palm estimated at about 200 years old, Ukraine's oldest palm, whose crown now touches the glass roof at a height of about 32 meters.
