History

The garden belongs to the Namhae County Agricultural Technology Center (남해군농업기술센터), which runs it and which groups nearby a soil laboratory, a smart greenhouse, processing facilities and the former "Garlic Land" (보물섬마늘나라), now the Tiyum Center.

The first dated document that concerns it is an article in the daily Gyeongnam Maeil of 7 September 2020. The county announces there that it has obtained subsidies from the Rural Development Administration and from South Gyeongsang Province to renew the centre's demonstration plots. The total budget, 750 million won, covers the rebuilding of the smart greenhouse, the redevelopment of the "Treasure Island Botanical Garden" (glass greenhouse and outdoor garden), five single-span plastic houses and the renovation of ageing facilities; the stated aim is to make it a well-known tourist spot.

Later articles describe the result. In October and December 2021, Media GN and the Gyeongnam Shinmun present the garden, with its areas, in a visit circuit prepared for the "Namhae Visit Year 2022" campaign. In April 2024 a press release from the centre, published by Yonhap, reports a steady rise in visitors.

Architecture and engineering

The 2021 press describes a single glass building (유리온실 1동) of 672 m², completed by a 48 m² management annex; the rest of the garden, 4,981 m², is open-air.

The county's official blog of July 2024 details the interior. The garden's information plan distinguishes the flower garden (초화원), the leaf garden (나뭇잎정원) and the greenhouse. At the greenhouse entrance a swing-shaped bench stands among succulents; midway along the route a "water garden" (물의 정원) holds aquatic plants. The blog calls it a quiet greenhouse, pleasant for contemplation, and a place where children can study nature.

Outside, the garden is ringed by dawn redwoods, according to a press release from the centre, and rest areas are scattered across the site. The same sources place the garden behind the agricultural centre's building, within a hundred metres of the Tiyum Center.

Plant collections

The greenhouse shows succulents, cacti and waterside and aquatic plants. The county's 2024 blog names, in the water garden, the water poppy (물양귀비), the water iris (꽃창포) and the water hyacinth (부레옥잠), and notes succulents at the entrance.

The outdoor garden is planted with seasonal flowers: tulips, daffodils, marigolds, impatiens (산파첸스), hydrangeas, together with perennials. Among the trees, the April 2024 press release names the loquat (비파나무), the 먼나무, spruce and ginkgo. Next to it, outside the garden, the so-called smart greenhouse, a 1,164 m² plastic tunnel house built in 2020, grows apple mango and eleven other subtropical fruits and is used for children's visits, according to the 2021 press.

Visiting

The garden lies behind the Namhae agricultural technology centre, in Idong-myeon on Namhae Island. Parking is easy, the centre and the Tiyum Center being within a hundred metres, and a dolmen and demonstration farm plots stand nearby; the April 2024 press release recommends the place as an outing for children.

The press releases describe a quiet stroll rather than a major visit: the greenhouse is small and the garden covers only a little over half a hectare. The press release highlights the tulips and daffodils of the outdoor garden. Next door, the Tiyum Center occupies the former "Garlic Land", whose exhibition rooms were devoted to garlic according to the 2021 press, and the neighbouring smart greenhouse serves as a teaching site for children.
