History

The Nakdonggang National Institute of Biological Resources (국립낙동강생물자원관) was set up as a legal entity on 3 June 2015, according to its Wikidata entry and the Korean Wikipedia article, which also gives its opening to the public on 28 July 2015. The complex at Donam-dong in Sangju is described as completed by September 2013 in a Seoul Shinmun article of July 2014. The same article explains that the opening was held back by the installation of the exhibits, some 4,800 specimens mostly imported from abroad, according to the Ministry of Environment. The institute focuses on freshwater biological resources: inventory, identification and conservation of species, together with educational programmes. In an interview published in November 2015, the director stated that the exhibition greenhouse was open to visitors and that he planned to complement it with native plants set out outdoors. The 2014 description of the complex already includes the greenhouse.

Architecture and engineering

The institute's site covers 123,592 m² and, according to a 2020 press report, comprises research and storage buildings, research greenhouses, breeding rooms, an exhibition and education building, and the exhibition greenhouse. The total floor area of the complex is 23,458 m² (2014 article), and the same article gives 951 m² for the greenhouse. The OpenStreetMap outline of this greenhouse, an eight-vertex polygon tagged greenhouse and named 전시온실, encloses roughly 967 m². That figure is derived from the outline, not a published measurement, but it agrees with the 2014 value. A May 2020 press report describes the envelope as transparent (투명한 전시온실) and surrounded by an outdoor exhibition area. A central water channel is laid out with changes in level, like a valley. The 2015 interview, by contrast, describes the greenhouse as set up outside, and the official page presents it as an indoor exhibition space while the site menu files it under outdoor exhibitions. A photograph published by the Yeongnam newspaper in May 2020 shows the interior: glazed walls on a metal frame, a light-coloured roof, a timber walkway and a stepped stream between rocks.

Plant collections

The greenhouse presents plants of the evergreen forest of the southern Korean peninsula: 137 species and more than 1,800 specimens according to the May 2020 press report, where the 2015 interview gave 136 species. The official page of the greenhouse also refers to plants representative of Ulleungdo and of these forests. It names ferns, orchids (풍란, 자란), camellias (동백나무), evergreen trees such as 후박나무 and 가시나무류, and aquatic plants: water lilies (수련) and lotus (연꽃). According to that page, the camellias are pollinated by small birds, including the 동박새. The site announces a display throughout the year (사계절 내내) without describing a particular flowering period.

Visiting

The greenhouse lies roughly midway along the straight axis linking the meeting plaza (만남의 광장) to the main entrance, according to the caption of an image on the official page. It forms part of an outdoor route that the 2020 press calls the path of reflection (사색의 길): it links the flower garden of the seasons with the spring of life and runs through the outdoor exhibition area around the greenhouse. Visitors can enter during the institute's opening hours, and the 2015 interview states that the greenhouse is open to the public. The same site includes a 4D theatre and exhibition halls of specimens.
