Opened on 20 May 2023 inside Yeongheung Forest Park, Suwon's municipal arboretum covers 146,000 m² and holds 1,084 species. Its display greenhouse, with a footprint of 1,781 m², stands on a rise of about 5 m against the Suyeonji pond; from a distance the press compares it to a huge glass box sliding into the water. Inside, a garden of subtropical plants surrounds pools of lotus and water lilies from around the world, and visitors also find coffee trees, palms and an artificial waterfall.

History

Yeongheung Arboretum is one of Suwon's first two municipal arboreta, alongside Ilwol Arboretum, which opened the day before. It sits inside Yeongheung Forest Park (501,937 m²), a neighbourhood park designated in June 1969 of which more than 90 % had remained undeveloped for lack of funds. The city began the works in 2014 under the "private park special project" scheme (민간공원 특례사업), which it says it was the first in Korea to use: a developer builds on 14 % of the land and lays out the rest as a park handed over to the municipality. The arboretum itself, 146,000 m², was built from January 2016 to August 2022 according to the official page (the monthly Gardening mentions a construction start in 2020) and inaugurated on 20 May 2023.

For the greenhouse, a September 2022 article credited it with 1,980 m² before opening, whereas the official page now gives a footprint of 1,781 m². In 2023 the arboretum and the forest park jointly received the Minister of Land, Infrastructure and Transport's prize (private-sector category) at the 13th Korea Landscape Grand Prize. By the end of May 2024 it had attracted about 296,000 visitors.

Architecture and engineering

The greenhouse has two floors above ground; the official page gives its footprint (1,781 m²) and floor area (1,886 m²). It stands on a rise about 5 m high, directly against an outdoor pond, the Suyeonji. From a distance, writes the monthly Gardening, it looks like a huge rectangular glass box about to slide into the pond; an OhmyNews report calls it a glass greenhouse of very large size and notes that people also come to admire the structure itself.

The monthly adds that the building is not large, but that the route, which exploits the change in level, lengthens the visit. Inside, several pools have been built for the lotus and water lilies, and an artificial waterfall enlivens the circuit.

Plant collections

The greenhouse's official theme is the subtropical climate: a garden of subtropical plants forms the backdrop for water lilies and lotus from around the world, which the official page calls unusual. A July 2024 article notes coffee trees and palms there, which it presents as hard to see in Korea, along with an artificial waterfall, a flower-decked photo spot and signs giving each plant's name.

Before opening, in 2022, the press listed among the greenhouse's trees and plants a ficus (대만고무나무, literally "Taiwan rubber tree"), mango, coffee, a red-skinned banana (홍피초바나나), papaya and bird of paradise. The arboretum as a whole holds 1,084 species.

Visiting

The greenhouse stands in the central space of the arboretum, the "flower and wild grass" section, next to the Suyeonji pond, the traditional Jeongjohyowon garden, the rock garden, the grass garden and the winter garden. The official presentation lists, from the visitor centre, the Blooming Garden slope, the wide lawn, the seasonal flower garden, the pond with the greenhouse, then the winter garden. On leaving the greenhouse, a terrace with a fountain looks over the arboretum; the visitor-centre café offers another overview.

Cheongmyeong station on the Suin-Bundang line is about ten minutes away on foot according to a 2024 article. The change in level lengthens the visit. The arboretum stages annual themed exhibitions, the 2026 one being titled "분홍, 그림 밖으로 피어나다" ("pink blooms out of the picture"), and opened its garden and greenhouse in the evening in June 2024.
