Designed by I. M. Pei & Partners, with Theodore J. Musho as lead designer, and built for IBM in Somers between 1984 and 1989, this campus groups four five-storey office buildings around a central services building, each lit by a pyramidal skylight. Nearly 3,000 employees worked there; IBM sold it in 2016.
History
Planning for IBM began in March 1983; construction started in July 1984 and ended in October 1989. The campus was designed by I. M. Pei & Partners, with Theodore J. Musho as lead designer; the landscape is by Hanna/Olin. Laid out for 2,700 employees, it held close to 3,000 at its busiest, drawn in particular from the Global Services, Software and Systems and Technology Group divisions.
IBM sold the site in 2016 to 294 Route 100, LLC, a company named after the property's own address. In September 2018 the town board heard a proposal for a school of 1,800 high-school pupils, most of them boarders; it needed a zoning change, as the land was then limited to offices and higher education. On 30 March 2026 a fire was deliberately set inside the empty complex.
Architecture
The complex was to house its workforce without overwhelming the hill beneath it, and to set it off instead. The firm therefore spread the volumes out as a family of buildings on sloping ground handled like a campus: four triangular five-storey office buildings ring a rectangular, four-storey central services building to which they are joined, with two further support structures.
The central building, the core of the complex, gathers the shared facilities; its reception hall is capped by a pyramidal skylight 50 feet (about 15 m) high. Partial pyramids bring light into the lobbies of the office buildings and give each one its own landmark. Together with the stepped walls, which add to the outer surface, these skylights help people find their way through the large compound and bring the landscape indoors. From the road, the five grouped peaks rise out of the forest.
Visiting
The site, private property, is fenced off and empty.
