Inspired by both the Palm House at Kew and Joseph Paxton's Crystal Palace, this horseshoe-shaped conservatory narrowly escaped demolition in the 1970s before a $10 million gift from philanthropist Enid Haupt saved it. Eleven pavilions arc around a central dome 27 meters high. Designated a New York City landmark in 1976, it remains the largest Victorian glasshouse still in operation in North America.
