History

Sunning Plaza, owned by Hysan Development, was built from 1977 to 1982 in Causeway Bay. It was Pei's first project in Hong Kong, ahead of the Bank of China Tower, built from 1983 to 1989. Seen as groundbreaking, the building became a model for Hong Kong office buildings in the 1980s.

By the end of 2013, Sunning Plaza and the neighbouring Sunning Court were being emptied so that Hysan could replace them together with an office and retail complex. Their site is now occupied by Lee Garden Three, a 32-level office and retail building completed in mid-December 2017.

Architecture

In the manner of similar Pei projects in the United States, the scheme combined an office tower and a residential block, linked by a small outdoor plaza: one of the few places in the district where people could sit, eat and drink in the open air. The tower had 30 levels of offices and shops, among them restaurants and cafés, and a generous entrance and lift lobby.

Visiting

The building has been demolished: Lee Garden Three now stands on its site in Causeway Bay.
