Completed in November 2003 in Kawasaki, this factory of the Rock Field company (ロック・フィールド) was set up to supply its shops in the Tokyo area. Tadao Ando's office was in charge of its design and supervision. Out of regard for the residential district around it, its design is meant to be clean and hygienic, with the image of "a big refrigerator in the city centre".
History
The factory was completed on 10 November 2003. It started out as the supply base for the company's shops in the Tokyo area: it assembles product components sent from Kobe and Shizuoka, helps to stock the shelves in the morning and meets demand peaks at the large flagship shops.
Architecture
The building has a steel structure (partly reinforced concrete), with three storeys above ground and a basement. It stands on a 2,766 m2 site with 5,423 m2 of floor area. Designed with its residential surroundings in mind, it aims at hygiene and neatness, with the image of "a big refrigerator in the city centre". Design and supervision are by Tadao Ando's office.
Use today
The factory now makes, among other things, fresh and fried spring rolls and quiches.
