In Kashimo, a forestry village in the east of Gifu Prefecture, Tadao Ando designed this centre, which includes a day-care centre for the elderly and social facilities for children. It is built with a great deal of local timber, under glulam trusses produced locally. The village was merged into the city of Nakatsugawa in 2005.
History
Kashimo, in the east of Gifu Prefecture, is a forested area known for its hinoki cypress. Part of its forests has been managed since the Edo period as a reserve of the Ise shrine, which supplies the timber for the shrine's periodic rebuildings.
Designed by Tadao Ando's office, the community centre was published in July 2004 in the magazine Shinkenchiku. The village of Kashimo was merged into the city of Nakatsugawa on 13 February 2005.
Architecture
The centre is built with a great deal of timber from the region. Its glulam trusses, produced locally, give the building a sense of openness.
Use today
The centre brings together, among other things, a day-care centre for the elderly and social facilities for children.
