On the Asia University campus in Wufeng, Tadao Ando designed an exposed-concrete museum whose basic element is the equilateral triangle: its three stacked, staggered levels form countless irregular triangles. The offsets create atriums and outdoor terraces. In response to the seismic zone, all of its columns are slanted. The museum opened on 24 October 2013.

History
The museum was created and built by the founder of Asia University (亞洲大學), Chang-Hai Tsai (蔡長海), and its co-founder, Tseng-lien Lin (林增連). In 2007 they invited Pritzker Prize laureate Tadao Ando (安藤忠雄) to design it. Six years of construction followed: the building was completed in 2013 and officially opened on 24 October of that year. Six specialist Japanese craftsmen were stationed on the site to teach the fair-faced concrete technique. It is Tadao Ando's first work in Taiwan.
In October 2022 the Taichung municipal government certified it under the Museum Act; it is the city's second private museum to be certified.
Architecture
The building is made of exposed concrete, and its basic figure is the equilateral triangle. The triangular plan is divided into three levels, which are staggered and stacked so as to form countless irregular triangles. These offsets create atriums and outdoor terraces, which house among other things a sculpture platform and an open-air café. The triangle recurs even in the floor tiles; seen from above, the building reads as three equilateral triangles.
In response to the seismic setting, the building does away with upright columns: every column in the museum is slanted. The spaces, built on V-shaped steel frames, and the views through the curtain wall take triangular forms as a result. The V-shaped steel columns strengthen the building against earthquakes and create a shaded zone outside, like a covered arcade.
At the entrance, the souvenir shop and the café face the way into the galleries; in the centre of the ground floor, a lecture hall, triangular as well, bears the architect's name, "Ando Hall" (安藤講堂). The two upper levels hold the main exhibitions. At the turn of the stair that links them, a tall space takes in daylight through an opening at the tip of a triangle.
The interior covers 4,111 m², on 19,840 m² of surrounding grounds.
Use today
The museum owns many works by the French sculptor Auguste Rodin and stages temporary exhibitions.
Visiting
The museum is open Tuesday to Sunday, from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., and closed on Mondays, as well as on Lunar New Year's Eve and the first day of the Lunar New Year. It stands within the Asia University grounds, in Wufeng.
Guided tours run at fixed times from Tuesday to Sunday; groups must request theirs in advance, and the museum reviews the request.
