The greenhouse (온실동) stands in the central activity zone of Yeonginsan Arboretum in Asan, an estate of 518,384 m² whose construction ran from March 2007 to May 2011 and which opened on 11 May 2012, beside the recreation forest of the same name. A photograph published by the official site shows a glass roof on a metal frame, curving beds edged in red brick and cacti. Sources from 2025 describe named cacti and tropical or warm-temperate plants.

History

The greenhouse belongs to Yeonginsan Arboretum, reached through the recreation forest of the same name on the slopes of Mount Yeongin in Asan. According to the official page, the recreation forest was designated on 12 October 1994 and opened on 28 December 1997. The arboretum was conceived as its complement: the official site speaks of collecting, propagating and conserving tree genetic resources and offering a place for learning about nature. Work began on 21 March 2007, completion is dated 30 May 2011 and the opening 11 May 2012. The whole is managed by the Asan City Facilities Management Corporation (아산시시설관리공단), which also runs the recreation forest.

The official plan lists the greenhouse as the greenhouse wing (온실동, no. 4-3) in the central activity zone, with the main building, the forest shelter, the upper stream pond and the children's ecology garden; the Encyclopedia of Korean Culture names it among the facilities of the same sector, with the seminar room. The greenhouse is therefore part of the arboretum; the dates above are those of the arboretum.

Architecture and engineering

A photograph of the interior posted on 29 November 2024 in the official site's gallery shows the structure. It shows a glazed roof, panes of glass carried on a light metal frame, with pipes fixed beneath the glazing and, along one side, a fabric shading screen. On the floor, raised beds with curving red-brick edges surround a brick-paved path, giving the space a winding layout rather than a straight nave.

The arboretum plan numbers the building 4-3, in the central zone. In OpenStreetMap only a point named 온실동 marks it, with no outline; that point carries the same name as the official plan. The photograph shows glass for the roof.

Plant collections

Descriptions differ slightly on what the greenhouse contains. An article from South Chungcheong Province, written after a visit on 9 October 2025, presents it as a small greenhouse devoted only to cacti, all growing well, and names five of them by their Korean names: geumho, jonggiok, gureumsoe, bimokdan and baekseom cheolhwa. A visit report dated late November 2025, republished by the province, speaks of tropical and warm-temperate plants, cacti and other exotic species, in air milder than outdoors.

The greenhouse is a minor component of an arboretum with a very different purpose: the official page gives 1,370 species and 382,231 plants in all, mostly trees and shrubs (cherries, maples, magnolias, mugunghwa, dwarf conifers) spread across outdoor themed gardens. The official figures vary from page to page (about 1,200 species, 1,180 or 1,370 depending on the text) and the Encyclopedia of Korean Culture counts 1,047; none separates what the greenhouse holds.

Visiting

The greenhouse lies in the central part of the arboretum, which is reached on foot from the recreation forest: the 2025 sources mention about twenty minutes of uphill walking from the car park and no separate booking for either the arboretum or the greenhouse. The author of the late-November 2025 report recommends it in winter, when the interior is mild, and finds it a little hot in summer.

On site, the official plan allows the greenhouse to be combined with the upper pond, the children's ecology garden and the arboretum's maple, cherry or medicinal-plant gardens. The same report lists, fifteen to twenty minutes away by car, Hyeonchungsa, Oeam Folk Village, Pinnacle Land, the World Flower Botanical Garden (세계꽃식물원), Gongseri Cathedral and Lake Sinjeongho.
