Begun in 1859 and completed in 1866, the Estufa Grande at the University of Coimbra's botanical garden is among the earliest iron-and-glass buildings in Portugal. A restoration led from 2013 by the architect João Mendes Ribeiro, which won the national urban rehabilitation prize in 2017, returned it to museum use. It now holds tropical and aquatic plants, including a giant Victoria water lily at its centre, and is visited by prior booking.
