In NaturaGart Park at Dörenthe, the leisure park of a garden-pond company, the Palmenhalle is a large hall under a glass roof that offers a holiday setting sheltered from the rain. The operator gives a 1,700 m² glass roof, a height of 11 m, 88 palms, arcades and a bistro. The hall adjoins the park's diving lake, whose dive base sits under a glass roof. It is not a labelled botanical collection.

History

The Palmenhalle belongs to NaturaGart Park, a park run by the garden-pond company NaturaGart that the regional magazine Westfalium headlined in 2017 as 'Urlaubslandschaft und Freilandlabor', a holiday landscape and an open-air laboratory. Wikipedia's article on Dörenthe places this nature-experience park next to the Loismann botanical garden, laid out in 1894-1895 with spoil from the Dortmund-Ems Canal, and says a landscaping and mail-order entrepreneur opened it. The park also has a large lake for divers, whose dive base is sheltered under a glass roof.

The hall existed by 2017 at the latest: on 24 May 2017 Westfalium described a 1,500 m² Palmenhalle where the Palmen-Bistro serves visitors in what the article calls a 'regensichere Urlaubslandschaft', a rain-proof holiday landscape. Since then the hall has served as a dining room, a reception hall for weddings and company events, a fall-back in bad weather and, according to a dive club's report, the home of the park's dive base.

Architecture and engineering

The hall presents itself as a large volume under glass. The operator gives 1,700 m² for the glass roof and speaks of an 11 m high glass hall; another of its pages describes a 1,500 m² building, a figure Westfalium repeats. The building outline in OpenStreetMap, taken from aerial imagery, covers about 1,700 m².

Several comfort features are described: the glass roof is shaded in strong heat, many side elements can be opened, and heated places are available in the glass hall or in the bistro when it is cold. Arcades line the courtyard, with seminar rooms on the other side (for 10, 30 and 100 people), and the lakeside terrace is glazed on all sides. The building adjoins the Unterwasserpark; the dive base's page calls the base 'komplett unter Dach', beneath a glass roof a few steps from the entry into the water. The dive club's report speaks of a large, light-filled 'Gewächshaus' protected from the weather, with the bistro in its lower part.

Plant collections

According to the operator's events page, 88 palms give park visitors the impression of a holiday landscape, and 'exotic vegetation' completes the scenery. On its page for celebrations the palms shade the tables in addition to the shading of the roof, and the Palmen-Bistro looks onto the hall and onto an underwater landscape. The same divers' report judges the place 'schön bepflanzt', nicely planted. The hall is a tropical setting with a bistro.

Next door, the lakeside terrace looks onto the Unterwasserpark, where divers are often visible. The operator describes a lake 120 m long and up to 60 m wide and 7.5 m deep, with more than 300 m of caves, a wreck, a temple setting and fish longer than 2 m.

Visiting

The hall stands in NaturaGart Park, against the diving lake. Weather is its reason for being: the operator presents it as the fall-back for rainy, windy or cold days, with a roof that is shaded in strong heat. The Palmen-Bistro does not open every day and, in winter, the park opens only on days free of snow and ice, so checking the official website before travelling is wise.

The diving lake has its own base and its own season (until 28 October in 2026 according to the hours page), but the lakeside terrace lets visitors watch the divers from the hall. The Loismann botanical garden, which Wikipedia places next to the park, is another possible stop; its opening status was not checked.
