The Montevideo Botanical Garden, founded in 1902 to a design by French landscape architect Carlos Racine, is home to an invernáculo (greenhouse) whose French-made structure was first installed in the Prado neighborhood before being moved to its current site in the 1920s. Recognizable by its distinctive yellow color, the greenhouse maintains an average temperature of 16 to 20°C in winter, which can climb as high as 42°C in summer, to shelter ferns, orchids, palms, and bromeliads. Closed for restoration, it reopened to the public on March 29, 2023, after its roof was completely replaced with polycarbonate panels.
