Rastlinjak, Ljubljana Botanical Garden

The Ljubljana Botanical Garden, founded as early as 1810 under the influence of Enlightenment ideas, did not gain its first greenhouse until 1955, as part of the postwar expansion of the site to 2.35 hectares carried out under the garden's postwar leadership. Modest in size compared with the great glasshouses of Central Europe, this rastlinjak nonetheless makes it possible to keep collections of tropical, subtropical and succulent plants that Slovenia's continental climate would otherwise rule out growing outdoors. The architect of this first structure is not documented in the available sources, and its precise dimensions likewise remain poorly known for lack of detailed published archives. It nonetheless stands in the continuity of one of Central Europe's oldest botanical gardens, today affiliated with the University of Ljubljana. Far from the splendor of imperial greenhouses, this small rastlinjak embodies a quieter history: that of Slovenia's postwar scientific and horticultural reconstruction.
