Founded in 1889 by professor Antun Heinz, the Zagreb Botanical Garden gained its first exhibition greenhouse as early as 1891, which for about a decade housed a working marine aquarium before it disappeared. A tall pavilion devoted to palms later took its place. Heated by coal for nearly a century, the greenhouse received a modern gas-fired boiler in 1989, then underwent extensive infrastructural renovation in stages during the 21st century. Closed in winter, the garden reopens to the public every spring.
