History

The Nobeoka Botanical Garden covers 8.7 hectares within Clear Park (クレアパーク), about five kilometres west of the city centre according to the municipal page. The site is surrounded by secondary forest, ancient burial mounds (古墳群) and fields. The Japanese encyclopedia and the Wikidata entry give 1987 as the year of creation, and the Japanese notice states that the garden was completed that same year. The garden also has a productive role: the city states that it produces 200,000 flower seedlings each year. For the greenhouse, the only source describing it is a local tourist page, which lists it among the facilities without dating it.

Architecture and engineering

The only image read, a 2010 photograph published under a free licence, shows an elongated building with a pitched roof whose slopes are fitted with glazed panels. The visible walls, on the right, are also glazed and divided by slender, light-coloured mullions. A small shelter with a dark roof stands in front of the building, with conifers and hedges behind it. A paved path runs along the greenhouse, lined with potted plants and clumps of pointed foliage. The volume looks modest beside the large trees nearby, but that impression holds only for this photograph.

Plant collections

The local tourist page and the Nobeoka notice describe the greenhouse as a home for tropical and subtropical plants, without naming any species. The garden offers a more detailed display: seasonal flower beds, a garden of Japanese irises (ハナショウブ), azaleas and satsuki, a citrus orchard (みかん園), a herb garden (ハーブ園) and a seedling field (苗田). In spring, according to the tourist notice, the flower festival shows about twenty species, amounting to 50,000 flowers.

Visiting

The garden is visited on foot, along paths through the forest, past three viewpoints, a large lawn, a play area and an outdoor fitness course (アスレチック施設). The greenhouse lies within the garden and is visited with it: entry to the garden is free. In spring, a flower festival shows about twenty species. A gardening advice centre, separate from the garden, opens on certain days. The garden lies about five kilometres west of the city centre, in Clear Park.
