In the middle of Washington Park, the Springfield Park District's botanical garden is organised around a dome 50 feet (about 15 m) across. The district dates the structure to 1971 and describes the original dome as acrylic, while other sources speak of glass. Having reached the end of its operating life, it was demolished and replaced on the same footprint, slightly taller, with new entryway windows and new heating and cooling; the ribbon was cut on 18 May 2026. The district counts more than 150 species of native and exotic plants there and about 60,000 visitors a year.

History

Washington Park was purchased for the city in 1900 and construction began in 1901, according to Wikipedia, which names Ossian Cole Simonds as the park's designer. The Sangamon County Historical Society says Simonds advised against building a greenhouse, judging other projects more pressing; one was built anyway and opened in 1909. LocalWiki, for its part, mentions a greenhouse of 1902 for bedding plants and further greenhouses added on the hill in the 1960s. According to the historical society, the 1909 greenhouse was replaced in 1966 by a horticultural center and conservatory topped by a glass dome about 50 feet across, which now forms the only botanical garden complex of the Park District, covering around 22 acres.

The dates for the dome diverge: the Park District says it was built in 1971, while LocalWiki and a 2018 Illinois Times article give 1972. In 1985 the district made this part of the park the Washington Park Botanical Garden (LocalWiki).

In 2023 the district announced that the dome would be replaced, having reached the end of its operating life despite routine upkeep: a $370,000 grant from the State of Illinois (Tourism Attractions and Festivals program) and a $380,000 gift from the William Ed Quarry Trust funded a project then priced at $750,000. A 2023 press photograph is captioned as showing a cracked dome. The project was finally reported at $1.3 million by WAND, and the ribbon was cut on Monday 18 May 2026.

Architecture and engineering

The dome measures 50 feet, about 15 m, across. The Park District describes the 1971 structure as an acrylic “Conservatory Dome”; older or secondary sources, including the county historical society, LocalWiki and the Illinois Times, speak of a glass dome. The new dome keeps the same 50-foot footprint but is slightly taller than the old one. Speaking to WAND, Park Board President Leslie Sgro said engineers had advised the district on how to replace the “pieces of glass” so that the structure would last another fifty years.

The works also replaced the entryway windows, for energy efficiency and visitor comfort, and installed modern heating and cooling systems, intended for visitors and plant collections alike. Around the dome, Wikipedia mentions a 9,000-square-foot greenhouse (about 835 m²); LocalWiki gives the same figure for the garden's indoor space. The Illinois Times also refers to a lobby and an Exhibition Hall where shows are held.

Plant collections

The Park District counts more than 150 species of native and exotic plants in the dome. At the 2026 ceremony the Park Board president put it at 3,200 species “just inside this dome”: that figure contradicts the district's own and should be read with caution. At the scale of the whole garden, Wikipedia reports over 1,200 species, more than 150 of them tropical, together with outdoor plantings: cactus, iris, rock and rose gardens, the rose garden holding about 5,000 plants.

The Illinois Times (2018) describes a dome where tropical plants are showcased and rotated in winter, with 75 to 80 °F (24 to 27 °C) when it is freezing outside, and finches and fish in the setting; the interim general manager noted that some people read there on their lunch hour. The paper announced the Prairie State Orchid Society's annual show and sale for 9 and 10 February that followed, which filled the dome and the lobby. Other articles in the same paper, from 2014 and 2016, mention in the Exhibition Hall a holiday floral show in December and a spring showcase (more than 800 Easter lilies, hyacinths, tulips and narcissus amid tropical foliage).

Visiting

The botanical garden stands in Washington Park, at 1740 West Fayette Avenue according to OpenStreetMap. Wikipedia and LocalWiki report free admission; opening hours differ from one source to another and are best checked with the district. In winter, the Illinois Times says, park walkers drop in to warm up; the dome is also a setting for weddings, receptions and birthdays, according to the district.

A visit combines naturally with the outdoor gardens (cactus, iris, rock and roses) and with the Thomas Rees Memorial Carillon, a concrete tower dedicated in 1962 according to Wikimedia Commons, which holds 67 bells by Petit & Fritsen: concerts take place every Sunday and, in summer, on Wednesday evenings (Wikipedia). OpenStreetMap places the carillon about a hundred metres east of the dome. The park has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 1992.
