« Rebuilt plank by plank after the 1995 storm. »
The oldest municipal wooden greenhouse still standing in the United States, it survived a fire in 1883 and then a devastating storm in 1995, when winds exceeding 160 km/h blew out 30,000 panes of glass and shattered its dome. Its restoration, completed in 2003 at a cost of $25 million, made it a symbol of the preservation of California's Victorian heritage, and it is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
