The oldest continuously operating botanical garden in the United States traces its origins to the collections brought back by the Wilkes Expedition to the Pacific in 1838. The current conservatory, built by the Lord & Burnham workshop, was relocated in 1933 just southwest of the Capitol, where it holds a symbolic place in Washington's institutional landscape. A complete renovation completed in 2001 made it accessible and sustainable.
