History

The CEIBS campus in Pudong, designed by Pei Cobb Freed & Partners, opened in October 1999, and its second phase was finished in May 2004. The third phase, added to keep pace with a growing student body, went to the same firm, which counts I. M. Pei among its founders, with China Haisum Engineering as associate architect. It stands on a 38,227 m² plot north of the existing campus, and the Shanghai municipal government helped to pay for it.

The third phase came into use in stages from 1 July 2013 and doubled the size of the campus. That same year it earned LEED Gold certification, the second-highest level of the scheme. The school, founded in November 1994, celebrated its 20th anniversary with the opening of the expansion.

Architecture

The expansion, next to the original campus, amounts to 61,000 m², bringing together a conference centre, an academic centre, a commons building and residence halls. Following the layout of the original campus, its buildings, broken up by greenery, are set around a shared central space, after the courtyard plan of Chinese tradition. They were built from renewable materials sourced in the region, using local building techniques.

A glass pyramid is the centrepiece of the third phase, set among the pools that are the campus's hallmark. Beside it stands the conference centre, 8,000 m² on four floors, with a multi-purpose hall, smaller meeting rooms and a 750-seat auditorium.

The upkeep of the pools relies largely on wastewater treatment: in 2013 an on-site plant handled 180 tonnes a day.

Use today

The conference centre's auditorium hosts the campus's major events. Several places around the new campus are set aside for exhibiting art from China and elsewhere.
