Tadao Ando designed the Akashi campus of the former Hyogo Prefectural College of Nursing, which opened in April 1993. An avenue of zelkova trees and a fountain enliven this bright campus. Since 2004 it has belonged to the University of Hyogo, which houses its nursing college there.
History
The Hyogo Prefectural College of Nursing (兵庫県立看護大学) opened in April 1993, after approval in December 1992, as the first public university in the country devoted solely to nursing.
In 2004 it was merged with the Kobe University of Commerce and the Himeji Institute of Technology to form the University of Hyogo (兵庫県立大学). The site became the latter's Akashi campus, and the institute for community care development (地域ケア開発研究所) opened there in December 2004. The former university was formally closed in March 2008.
Architecture
Tadao Ando was involved in the whole design of the campus. It is a bright place, enlivened by an avenue of zelkova trees and a fountain.
Use today
The campus houses the University of Hyogo's nursing college and its graduate programmes, from master's to doctoral level.
Visiting
This is the campus of a working university. It is reached by bus from Akashi station (a ride of about 6 minutes), then a few minutes on foot.
