History
The name Nadahama Garden Baden recalls both the neighbouring park, centred on a lawn, and the famous German spa town of Baden-Baden. The facility is run by Kobe Steel, and the design is by Tadao Ando's office.
Architecture
The building is a combination of two ovals, one large and one small, that link the park and the facility. Its floor area is 2,263 m².
Heat for the baths and the building's air conditioning come from surplus energy from the Kobe power station. In a disaster the pool water can be used for fire-fighting and for everyday needs: the facility serves as a base for disaster preparedness in the area.
Use today
The bath zone, where swimwear is required, has a 16 m pool equivalent to two lanes, an aqua-gym pool, a flowing pool for walking in water, a low-temperature sauna, a steam bath, jet baths and an outdoor jacuzzi. The spa zone, without swimwear, has a mineral bath, an artificial carbonated bath, a sauna and a cold bath. There is also a relaxation room.
Visiting
The facility is open from 10:00 to 21:30, with last entry at 20:30. It closes on the third Wednesday of the month (the next day if that Wednesday is a holiday) and from 30 December to 3 January. People with tattoos are refused entry.
