History

South of Sengawa station, a family owned a long strip of land that a 16 m wide metropolitan road, under a plan decided in 1990, was to cut through, leaving only triangular or narrow plots on either side. Fearing that a sale would bring uncontrolled development, the owner wanted a coherent streetscape and asked Tadao Ando to design it; his office agreed in 1995.

Completed in 2004, this building is the first of the street's two condominium blocks, the second having been finished in 2012. It is one of the six Ando buildings that line the street today.

Architecture

The building is a box of concrete and glass, a motif taken up by every building on the street, which gives the streetscape its unity. At the entrance and inside alike, the concrete is left bare; in the interior corridor, narrow-beam lighting gives the space a certain tension.

Use today

The building holds 61 dwellings, from around thirty square metres up to maisonettes of over 130 m², with shops on the ground floor along the street.
