Built beside the concrete 4×4 House, this timber house echoed its form, with three levels above ground and black walls. Tadao Ando designed it for a different client, and it was demolished in 2014.
History
The 4×4 House II was built to the east of the concrete 4×4 House, in Tarumi-ku. Unlike the first, which came from a call to readers of BRUTUS magazine, it was a private commission to Tadao Ando (安藤忠雄). The client, owner of the adjacent plot, wanted a similar house; Ando proposed building it on the adjacent plot, but in timber. The house was demolished in 2014.
Architecture
The house echoes the form of the 4×4 House, but it is of timber, has three levels above ground and black outer walls. Its top room is set slightly to the west, while that of the first house is set to the east, so that the two buildings are symmetrical about their centre line. The timber is laminated Oregon pine, and the floors are paulownia.
Ando saw the pair as a gateway opening towards the sea, made of two contrasting materials, concrete and wood.
Visiting
The house no longer exists.
