Completed in March 2012 in Izumi, this triangular building designed by Tadao Ando's office and built by Takenaka housed an obstetrics and gynaecology clinic, closed at the end of 2021. It holds a water garden and carries a garden on its roof. Set on an embankment, it is barely visible from the surrounding roads; in 2013 it received an encouragement prize in the Osaka architecture and townscape competition.
History
Oiki Ladies Clinic 2 (老木レディスクリニック2) was a branch of the Oiki Ladies Clinic, opened in April 2000. It opened in this building in May 2012, with seven beds, for obstetrics, gynaecology and paediatrics. The client is the medical corporation Oiki Ladies Clinic (医療法人 老木レディスクリニック). The clinic effectively closed on 26 December 2021.
Architecture
The building was completed in March 2012 to designs by Tadao Ando's office (安藤忠雄建築研究所) and built by Takenaka (竹中工務店). Its volume is a triangle that holds a water garden, and a garden occupies its roof. Tall trees, such as Griffith's ash (Fraxinus griffithii), surround the plot.
Set on an embankment, it is hard to see from the neighbouring roads. The jury's comment notes that it took its place in the landscape of rolling suburban hills without spoiling it, and that its tall trees and planted roof blend with the surroundings. It received an encouragement prize at the 33rd edition, in 2013, of the Osaka architecture and townscape competition (大阪まちなみ賞).
Visiting
The clinic has closed and the building is not open to visitors.
