The client's only wish was total privacy, and Tadao Ando turned it into an "invisible" house: largely buried in the middle of a 32,000 m2 plot surrounded by a wall of trees, it shows only its entrance volume from the road. Underground, the house is a labyrinthine space on a 7.2-metre grid, punctuated by skylights and inner courts.

A private, lived-in home: it is not open to visitors. It is placed without an address, from a public source, at neighbourhood or city level.

History

The commission covered both the siting and the layout of the house, which left great freedom to the project. All the client asked for was complete privacy, shielded both from the nearby streets and from the edges of the site. This modest wish gave rise to the idea of the "invisible house". Ando named it so because it merges into the countryside behind a curtain of trees. The project is dated 1999 to 2004.

Architecture

The house stands in a rich natural setting on the outskirts of Treviso. Set partly underground in the middle of a 32,000 m2 plot ringed by a screen of trees, it hardly registers in the landscape: from the road, nothing shows but the entrance block. Hills were specially shaped in the countryside, and the dense row of planted trees forms a protective curtain.

Despite the simplicity of its plan, based on a 7.2-metre grid, the interior is a labyrinthine space underground, filled with spatial experiences unexpected in daily life. Inside this strict grid, daylight is what varies the succession of spaces: openings cut in the roof overhead, courts of several kinds that turn inside into outside, and shifts in floor level. Grassed banks conceal two of its three levels; the third draws light into the house through large windows facing two sunken amphitheatres. The building is made of concrete and glass. The five-metre-high entrance tunnel is the only volume that departs from the grid.
