The first phase of this food factory in Iwata dates from 1991, and Tadao Ando's office designed and supervised all four phases built up to 2020. The building, which brings a museum to mind, was designed to blend with the surrounding countryside. A wind turbine and a biotope are used to purify the factory's wastewater.
History
The first phase of the factory was completed on 27 May 1991, followed by a second on 16 May 2000, a third on 22 April 2009 and a fourth on 8 October 2020. Tadao Ando's office handled design and supervision for all four. The fourth, with two storeys above ground and 7,965 m² of floor area, was built to raise output; it also brought solar panels, and the wind turbine was renewed, at 600 kilowatts, double the earlier capacity.
Factories are rare in Ando's work, which leans toward housing and commercial buildings.
Architecture
The factory was designed to blend with the green countryside around it, and its building, which brings a museum to mind, aims to coexist with nature. The structure is steel, partly reinforced concrete, and the whole stands on a site of 76,277 m².
The wind turbine, a landmark, and the biotope form a loop: cleaned with wind energy, the wastewater flows into the biotope, where nature carries the purification further.
Use today
The factory makes salads, croquettes, juices and salad dressings.
Visiting
The factory welcomes tours, mainly for primary and middle schools around Iwata.
