History
Rokko III is the third phase of Tadao Ando's housing at the foot of Mount Rokko, after Rokko I (1983) and Rokko II (1993). It was finished in 1999; each phase had a different client. In 2009 Ando completed a fourth hillside complex at the foot of Mount Rokko, combining a hospital and a nursing home with care.
Architecture
Where the first two phases play on homes of varied sizes, plans and orientations, the third is more standardised, for economic and commercial reasons. The number of homes rises from the twenty of the first phase to one hundred and seventy-four here, for 24,222 m2 of floor area.
As in the two earlier phases, the structure and the facades are reinforced concrete, the stepped composition follows the slope, and shaded axes serve as shared places among neighbours. The site faces south, with views over Osaka Bay as far as the port of Kobe.
Visiting
The complex is made of homes and is not open to visits.
