Designed by Tadao Ando in 1976-77 in Ashiya, this house stood between two large walls rising freely in nature, which marked off a territory for living. Plain in themselves, the walls sheltered the interior while mirroring the shifts of the natural world and drawing them into everyday life. The house no longer exists.
History
Ando designed the house in 1976-77. In his 1978 essay "The Wall as Territorial Delineation", he takes it as an example of the way he uses the wall. It appears in the catalogue of the exhibition of original drawings from Ando's early career, held in 2019 by the National Archives of Modern Architecture (国立近現代建築資料館).
Architecture
In Ando's words, the walls of this house, rising freely in nature, marked off a territory for human dwelling. Plain in themselves, the two main boundary walls sheltered the interior; at the same time they mirrored the shifts of the natural world and helped bring it into the residents' daily life. On the terrace, the forest landscape pressed right up to the house.
Visiting
