At the entrance to the zoo in Calderglen Country Park, East Kilbride, the tropical conservatory serves as reception and gift shop and leads on to the ornamental gardens. Its plants are grouped by continent (South America, Africa, Australasia, Asia), with a large cactus collection, a banana grove and an interactive rainforest tree. Damaged in a storm, the building closed on 8 December 2025 for a roof replacement, and reopened with the zoo on 3 April 2026.

History
Calderglen Country Park lies on the eastern edge of East Kilbride, in a wooded glen carved by the Rotten Calder. According to Wikipedia it was designated in 1978 and officially opened in 1982, and it takes in parts of the former Calderwood, Mauchlinhole and Torrance estates. The historic visitor centre is Torrance House, which is Category A listed. The children's zoo also dates from 1982, according to South Lanarkshire Leisure and Culture, which runs the park.
The tropical conservatory houses the reception and gift shop, the entry point for the zoo and ornamental gardens, and its horticultural and keeper staff run events there throughout the year.
On 2 December 2025, South Lanarkshire Leisure and Culture announced that the zoo would close from 8 December 2025: the conservatory had been damaged in an earlier storm and its roof was to be replaced, for the safety and comfort of animals and visitors, over an estimated eight to twelve weeks. The park first hoped to reopen in mid-March. The reopening finally took place on 3 April 2026, just before the Easter holidays, according to the park's Instagram post of 1 April.
Architecture and engineering
The building is mapped on OpenStreetMap as "Calderglen Conservatory" and tagged as a greenhouse. South Lanarkshire Leisure and Culture, which runs the park, presents it under the heading "Conservatory and gift shop", through which visitors enter the zoo and ornamental gardens: reception and shop are therefore housed under its roof, and the building acts as the front door to the zoo and gardens.
The plants are grouped by continent: South America, Africa, Australasia and Asia. The main structural intervention on record is the replacement of the roof, decided after storm damage and completed in spring 2026. In the official photograph of the conservatory published by the park's operator, the tropical interior (a sculpted rainforest tree, palms, tree ferns, a pond) sits under a clear roof of pitched panels on metal profiles, of glasshouse type.
Plant collections
The conservatory holds the park's tropical plant collection, arranged by continent: South America, Africa, Australasia and Asia. The park's operator mentions a large cactus collection, a banana grove and an "interactive rainforest tree". Horticultural staff and keepers run events there during the year, and the conservatory's own presentation speaks of "plants and animals from all around the world".
Wikipedia mentions reptiles and fish in the tropical glasshouse, and a 2012 visitor on geograph refers to reptiles and plants. The surrounding zoo, about an acre in size, has more than fifty species according to the operator's site, including meerkats, wallabies, coatis and otters.
Visiting
The visit starts at the Zoo Reception and Gift Shop, inside the conservatory, which gives access to the zoo and the ornamental gardens. The park, run by South Lanarkshire Leisure and Culture, also has the Courtyard Cafe, Torrance House and its exhibition gallery, a play area and over five kilometres of wooded glen with waterfalls and trails.
Admission to the zoo and conservatory is charged. The events programme varies with the seasons (keeper talks, workshops, treasure hunts) and depends on weather and staffing, so it is worth checking the park's social media before travelling. As the zoo is small, it combines well with a walk in the glen.
